Chapter 6, Unexpected Attack

Dark Small Medium Large Original Scroll to Bottom

In the darkness, Ren Meier stood in front of me, who was lying on the ground, holding a stick in her hand, staring blankly at me. Finally, she sighed, tossed the stick aside, and gently crouched down beside me. She carefully placed her hand on my nose, and only then did she breathe a sigh of relief. Then she squatted down, helped me up, and carried me on her back. Despite Ren Meier's frail body, it was unclear where she found the strength; it seemed that carrying me was not a burden for her as she strode purposefully from the fields outside the wall towards the road.

I cannot save her, I sighed inwardly. He, with his inherently kind nature, could watch as Ren Meier was torn apart by the corpse after he stepped away. Although that would slow the corpse down, giving him more time to escape, instinctively, I bent down and pulled Ren Meier up, effortlessly hoisting her onto my shoulder, as this was less strenuous than carrying her in my arms.

In my mind, there was nothing else, only the urge to rush back and save someone. In just ten short steps, I felt as if I had exhausted all my strength. I grabbed Ren Meier's hand without a moment to speak, pulling her along as we ran towards the outside of the funeral home courtyard. My eyes were fixed in terror on Li Congying's corpse, my heart nearly stopping. Watching the body dragging a string of intestines, it was still approaching us. For a moment, I felt my scalp explode, as if all the blood in my body surged to my head. My vision darkened, and I almost collapsed to the ground. Fortunately, it was just for a moment, but I hesitated slightly because of it. When I regained my senses, I pulled Ren Meier and continued running towards the outside of the funeral home courtyard, my eyes still terrified as I stared at Li Congying's corpse. My heart was nearly stopping again, watching the body dragging a string of intestines, still coming this way. For a moment, I felt my scalp explode, as if all the blood in my body surged to my head. My vision darkened, and I almost fell to the ground again. Thankfully, it was just for a moment, but I hesitated slightly because of it. When I regained my senses, I felt a jolt in my heart, realizing that the distance between the corpse and myself was almost the same as that to the gate. Would I collide directly with the corpse at the gate?

Before I could fully regain consciousness, I felt a heavy blow to my head. It was a significant impact, and I finally could no longer hold on, slowly collapsing to the ground. My last thought was whether the corpse had already emerged, faster than I had. After that, there was nothing but boundless darkness, and I knew nothing more.

A sound of a heavy object falling came from outside; it was Ren Meier who had fallen to the ground. Then, a sound of "yi ming" was heard, presumably because of the impact, which caused the unconscious Ren Meier to regain consciousness.

How long is a distance of a few steps? When one is desperately running, how many seconds can it take? Generally, a hundred-meter sprint takes a person about ten seconds. This distance of a few meters actually equates to just two seconds. What can be accomplished in two seconds? Taking a puff of a cigarette takes longer than that. Two seconds might allow for a fleeting thought, but it is certainly not enough time to come up with an idea. Therefore, in these two seconds, I have only taken my tenth step, and I can see that I am almost at the entrance, while the body is still seven or eight steps away. Clearly, there is still time for me and Ren Meier to escape. Taking a puff of a cigarette takes longer than that. Therefore, in these two seconds, I have only taken my tenth step, and I can see that I am almost at the entrance, while the body is still seven or eight steps away. Clearly, there is still time for me and Ren Meier to escape.

However, there was no time to think about these things; I only knew that once I stopped, I would inevitably be caught by the corpse. Thinking of Zhao Shugang's tragic fate, I couldn't help but shiver. Yes, Li Congying was already dead; the corpse before me could not possibly be Li Congying. I firmly believed in all of this because I trusted that Li Congying would never harm his own brother. Therefore, the corpse that killed Zhao Shugang could not be Li Congying.

At last, a series of sirens could be heard in the distance, as two or three police cars sped over. The piercing sound of the sirens shattered the silence of the night, awakening many who were lost in sweet dreams, prompting them to speculate about what major incident had occurred. It was quite bothersome to have several police cars with their sirens blaring in the middle of the night.

I remember that beneath the large chimney where clothes were burned, there should have been a pot or a stove made of bricks, standing about half a person’s height, closely against the surrounding wall. It would be quite easy to leap up from that spot and scale the wall. In the dim light, I vaguely saw that pot, still about ten steps away from me.

As Ren Meier disappeared into the darkness, the funeral home returned to silence, with only the body of Zhao Shugang by the roadside and the body of Li Congying lying in the courtyard. The two horrifying corpses still bore witness to the terrifying scene that had just unfolded. Occasionally, passing cars either failed to notice the mangled body by the roadside or, upon discovering it, hurriedly fled in terror, mistakenly believing it to be a traffic accident, especially since a large truck was still parked by the highway.

Under the guidance of two drivers, the group of police officers finally encountered the body, which had been torn apart. Some officers could not help but vomit; it was truly brutal to have a person dismembered in such a manner. The veteran detectives followed the trail left by the intestines towards the mortuary, proceeding with utmost caution. Not far from the entrance, they spotted a severed piece of intestine, sending chills down their spines. What had transpired here? Upon entering the courtyard, they saw the body lying on the ground—Li Congying's body. Some detectives were astonished to realize that this was the same body they had dealt with yesterday. How could it have been disemboweled again?

However, upon seeing Ren Meier lying on the ground, a pang of bitterness struck my heart. Should I save her or not? If I were to save her, I would need to bend down and lift Ren Meier. Although she appeared quite frail, likely weighing no more than one hundred pounds, it shouldn't be too difficult for me under normal circumstances. However, at this very moment, the terrifying corpse was just behind me, only a few steps away. I no longer knew the exact distance, only that it was very close. I might not be able to escape; the outcome could be that I would be captured alongside Ren Meier, perhaps meeting a fate as tragic as Zhao Shugang, who was disemboweled in a most horrific manner. I shuddered again.

The consequence of this incident was that I was suddenly seized without any defense. Although I managed to break free from Ren Meier's grasp, I still fell to the ground. Ren Meier, however, fared worse; she fell backward and landed heavily on the ground, her head striking the concrete surface, and she fainted without making a sound

Instinctively, I turned and retreated inside, turning my body as I backed away. Alternatively, there was the possibility of escaping by climbing over the wall. Although this would take me further from the road, it was the only option available at that moment. In that instant, I made my decision and turned around, already running towards the courtyard.

I dared not hesitate any longer. Taking a deep breath once more, I regained a bit of strength, then leaped forward with all my might, grasping the edge of the wall with both hands. In one swift motion, I flipped over and landed heavily on the ground, rolling over before standing up. However, as I suddenly transitioned from a well-lit area into darkness, I found it difficult to adapt, and before me lay a vast expanse of blackness

Just as I felt I was about to adapt to the darkness, I vaguely saw a figure standing right in front of me. Then, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my head, a wave of dizziness surged through my nerves, and I nearly fainted. However, I instinctively leaned against the wall, preventing myself from collapsing. Yet, my head was in a daze, and I couldn't remember anything.

Perhaps www.hetushu.com is a psychological effect; I even seemed to hear the footsteps of a corpse right behind me. At that moment, I unleashed all the strength I had for the first time since I was born. Even though I was still carrying someone, I ran faster than usual. If this speed were to be used in a competition, it would definitely secure first place. Unfortunately, this was a matter of life and death.

After a brief moment of dizziness, I sprang up from the ground. After all, having played basketball for many years, my physical condition was quite good. However, when I stood up, I realized that the corpse was already right in front of me, no more than two steps away. If I ran forward, I would only collide with the corpse; there was simply no way to escape. The strength of the corpse was evident, as it could tear open a chest cavity with bare hands. Once caught by the corpse, the consequences sent a shiver down Liu Gang's spine

However, there will always be many things in the world that leave one feeling helpless. At such an important moment, Ren Meier, still in a daze, suddenly awakens, only to find that the first thing she comprehends is her completely deceased groom, who is stiffly walking towards her, dragging a string of colorful intestines between his feet. Even in the darkness, the vividly colored intestines are strikingly noticeable. The instinct of a woman causes Ren Meier to hesitate, and she abruptly comes to a standstill.

However, at this moment, I was almost exhausted, feeling a burning sensation in my chest and lungs, as if I were about to explode. My eyes began to blur, and my head felt dazed; these were symptoms caused by oxygen deprivation. This was not my first experience, so I endured it and rushed to the edge of the pot, taking a decisive leap to hoist Ren Meier up.

Only at this moment did I have the time to take a deep breath; the icy air penetrated my chest and abdomen, causing me to cough twice. However, as oxygen and the surrounding environment filled my lungs, some of the strength I had nearly exhausted returned, and my vision became clearer. My mind was no longer in a daze. With a grunt, I exerted myself forcefully and threw Ren Meier off the wall, as if tossing a burlap sack. At that moment, I could not afford to consider anything else.

Just as I climbed over the wall, I casually glanced back, but at that moment, I saw a corpse for some unknown reason fall to the ground, and it seemed there was no sign of it getting back up. However, I had no time to ponder this; I had to escape quickly, or else I would be caught by the corpse, and the outcome would be chilling.

What has happened to Ren Meier? Why did she knock me unconscious but then refrain from harming me? No one knows. Watching her move with such agility, showing not a hint of fear, could it be that she is not afraid of that terrifying corpse from just now? Even more so, no one knows the answer to this.

Stepping out of the fields, Ren Meier carried me on her back and strode along the road towards the city. As we passed by Zhao Shugang's decayed corpse, she merely glanced at it with a sidelong look, showing no sign of fear, and then continued walking into the distance

The police came to a sudden halt beside the large truck, and a group of officers rushed out of the police car, some even brandishing firearms. Then, two bloodied individuals timidly emerged from the police vehicle; they were the drivers of the two large trucks. It turned out they had fled to a nearby village, bursting into a small restaurant that was still open, and only then did they think to call the police. In their panic, they hardly had time to tend to their wounds, merely covering them with towels. Fortunately, their injuries were not severe. The two, still shaken, recounted the terrifying scene they had just witnessed.
